  • 2*NIC + internet connection sharing

[will post in english, since my swedish kinda sucks..]

My setup is like this :

    2*nic in my computer
first one directly connected to inet, gets ip via dhcp from isp
second one connected to xbox with crossover cable, static ip set by me (192.168.2.11.)
    xbox got ip 192.168.2.12

it's all working fine as it is, I can ftp to xbox and transfer files back and forth, no problem.

The problem is when I want my xbox to connect to the internet as well. I tried sharing (ICS) the first nic, and first thing it does is to block ftp access to the xbox. After a few minutes it just entirely disconnects me from the inet as well.

My first nic (connected to inet) has a totally auto-setup, gets everything via dhcp.
The second one (to the xbox), has a static ip, hostmask 255.255.255.0 and no gateway defined.
Xbox got static ip (in xbmc), hostmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway is defined as the nic it's connected to on the computer (192.168.2.11). I tried both giving it dns servers grabbed from my inet connection (ipconfig /all) and used the second nic as dns server as well, same result.

The problem is that I'm not able to use a router, since I only got one MAC address registered at my isp, hence i need to get xbox cennected via ICP somehow.

Anyone out there with the same setup, 2 nics in comp, and got xbox connected via ICP (and of course still got the ftp option back and forth from comp <-> xbox, please let me know if you got this working. Has been bothering me for months and there seems to be no guide for this particular setup, at least not one that's working...

Please advice, thanks in advance !

I got it setup like that ... and its working.
(I assume you have windows XP)

    - First set your PCs IP as Gateway and DNS in the XBox.
    - Then make sure that your XBox IP is set as a trusted IP in your PCs firewall.
    - And last go in to your internet connection on your PC, take up properties and on the Advance tab mark the checkbox: "Allow other network users connect via the internet connection on this computer" - I think its called that way in english(my Win XP is Swedish)

    Good Luck.

      First, thanks for the reply.

I tried that several times.. A notice here is that i'm testing this without any firewall (including winxp sp2 built-in fw, which is disabled as well).
When I do that the following happens. First of all I can no longer ftp to xbox, second thing happening is that my inet connection times out and eventually logs me off everything (irc, msn etc). Which leaves me with no connection to xbox or inet at all. I agree, that what you suggested should be the proper procedure, but I tried it out several times, even as first thing after a clean install (sp2 fw disabled of course).
My best guess is that a NIC with a specified gateway will overrule any dhcp settings for the other NIC and be prioritized above dhcp by windows. I can't confirm that though.
Weirdest thing is still that when I enter a gateway on my second nic, then it cuts off my inet connection.

I'm still working on it, any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated though

Well, got a bit further now. Xbox connects to inet, show weather updates (which is really nice, hehe.)
The only problem left is that after I did share my inet connection, then I can't ftp to xbox..

Same config here, no gateway, my bad. Everything works, exept ftp to xbox now. As soon as I disable ics i can ftp xbox, but not as long as it is turned on. I can stream music from pc to xbox fine with ics on, and I get ping replys (and grey hair..)

              What's ICS? Internet Connection Sharing?

Ya it is. Right now, I'm just disabling ICS when I need to use ftp to xbox. Pretty sure it's a windows issue and nothing to do with the xbox though.
