  • CPU 75-80 degrees.

    Hi,

Sorry for the english here but I am from england

Anyway I sent my xbox into you guys for jtagging and after running the xbox in xexmenu I see the CPU is at 80degrees ! The GPU and memory etc are around 45-50...

I have had this box for years and this seems a little excessive for heat to be extreme. What gave this away in the first place was I was playing some games and the box was actually too hot to touch, I cant remember it being like this before. Thats whne I decided to check the temp in Xexmenu.

Now when the xbox is cold and first on and striaght into Xexmenu the CPU temp is in the mid 70s and starts to climb... I am actually worried to use the xbox now as this temp will kill it in no-time. My question is what suggestions do you have, I did look at the xclamp on the CPU and its very loose.

Also I see you have installed some programmer, what is this for?

    Cheers,

    Jamie

Hi Jamie, don't worry about speaking english here, as long as you do not post things that seem out of the place like links to drugs or whatever it's perfectly fine to speak english here (we tend to get bots that register here...)

Anyhow... i suggest you swap the x-clamps for screws, the "programmer" is nothing we leave in it, or do you mean the D-Sub9 with 7 cables attatched to it which is attatched to the motherboard? if so it's nothing that is really needed, just makes it easier for us in the future if we need to get access to the NAND, we don't have to open up the whole console in order to get to it, just remove the faceplate and the top cover and we have access to the NAND...

What might have happend when you got your machine JTAG-Hacked is that we didn't get the 8 black screws sitting as hard as they used to, we remove these in order to get to the underside of the Motherboard to remove R6T3 and with HDMI machines we solder cables to the below side instead of to the RF-Module (to make it easier to open up the console in the future, without removing cables and re-soldering them and so on)

Ok but I would have hoped you would have checked this after you had done the jtag hack. As it stands right now I cannot dare to use the xbox for fear of it frying to death.

What screws should I use? I presume I will also need washers etc?

You'll need 8 M5x10 screws, and 24 M5 washers (2 in between the cooling thingy's and the motherboard, and 1 between the screw head and the motherboard on the other side of the motherboard) you'll also need to put new paste in between (IMPORTANT: REMOVE THE OLD ONE FIRST!!)

We test the consoles before we return them to the customers, to make sure they work, our test is basicly that the console works at all and takes games, we don't play on it to test if it get's warm or so... (unless it's been in for a RROD-FIX which we test the consoles after repair for several hours [with a video that put's alot of pressure on the console] to make sure the error don't return right away)

Do you have a good link to refer to

Also I dont suppose you guys do this aswell? Do you offer services such as this, personally I want my CPU heat to be around 60.

Out of curiosity what should the temp be.

Oh and when I mentioned the heat was 75-80 it wasnt during game play its when its first turned on!

normal temperture is about 65-70 degree's... but you should always be able to hold your hands around the console without feeling like you're going to get burnt...

yes we do this aswell, but i don't know the price for it, since we ussually do this while doing a RROD-Fix which takes alot longer (due to the need to test it for a long time and so on)

i'll check with Hansi tomorrow, to see what price it'll be... i can't decide on a price myself i'm afraid... maybe he'll read this himself and tell you what it'll cost... but i'll let you know as soon as i know what it would cost ya...

i understand you don't want to be messing around with a 360 unless you know what you're doing... the magic blue smoke is so easy to get out...

If we did something wrong the last time, it will not cost anything to correct it. But if you want to further improve the box it will cost 350-500-700:ish depending on how much time we need to add compared to just fixing what we did wrong. Basically we charge 350:- for a 30 minute job. RROD fixes cost 1000:- because they tend to eat time with all the testing, the occasional redoing efter test etc.

Ok well its not a RROD so maybe we can meet in the middle. I basically want this thing running cool. 70-80 is very bad even when in use let alone idle.

What do you suggest we do, I am happy to have it improved, ie the xclamps removed and a more suitable way of distributing the pressure evenly on the CPU and GPU. Note the GPU looks to be solid and good currently.

I am also keen to add more cooling, and I care not how noisey it is, my xbox is on the otherside of a wall and not in the main room so that is not an issue. As i said I want this thing to be stable and cool.

Bring it back to the shop and talk to "swizzy". I will give you 30 minutes of labor free of charge, the next 30 minutes needed is 350:-, that should be enough time to replace the thermal grease and do the xclamp thingy. Maybe add a core cooler fan if we have a suitable one for your box.

Well after being on the booze I got back late last night to try out the change. Turned it on cold in xexmenu and it was at first 60 degress, looked really good... but then it started to climb and climb...

                              Ended up on 80.3 - 80.4.

                              So no improvement at all.

I havent opened the box at all, but did you guys remove the xclamps? I presume you did, as this must be a heat sink seating issue.
