Well after being on the booze I got back late last night to try out the change. Turned it on cold in xexmenu and it was at first 60 degress, looked really good... but then it started to climb and climb...

    Ended up on 80.3 - 80.4.

    So no improvement at all.

I havent opened the box at all, but did you guys remove the xclamps? I presume you did, as this must be a heat sink seating issue.
as i explained on the phone when i spoke to you we swapped the cooling totally, for the better from a Falcon machine... and i also told you when i tested it myself (before opening it up) the tempertures started at 80 degree's and kept climbing up to 88 before i turned it off, which i did after a few seconds... it went up about 1.5 degree's a second before i opend it up... and if you add the corecooler i told you about on the phone...

also, we changed the x-clamps for screws, like i told you earlier in the thread you could do to inprove the cooling... your motherboard is a pre-RROD Xenon, they do tend to get very warm, i bet the RROD code it was fixed for before was 0020, overheating of CPU/GPU... when i removed the x-clamps i discovered that it has been RROD-Fixed, but not properly (the person whom repaired it only changed the thermal compound, not the X-Clamps for screws and washers...)

    *edit:*

if you add a Core Cooler v2 it'll lower the temperture with about 6-7 degrees more (it'll end up at around 73-74 degrees) you might also want to do a even greater mod with cooling, like 4everapple1 did, he mounted a fan above the CPU throught the case (he made a new hole and mounted a fan there) see this thread for more information: http://forum.psxcare.com/support/sho...d.php?p=224826

I just overheard that Swizzy actually swapped your cooling clamps ( Old ones with copper based heat sink on the CPU to a new improved Aluminium one and the old aluminium sink on the GPU to a Aluminium with a Copper heat pipe extension nodded one ) so the box could operate under less temperature stress. That configuration is common for Ms to do on newer Falcon modbos and refurb 360 units and just the total cost for the parts he installed there comes to a total of 400 sek if you want to buy it as spare parts from us I know the guys that worked with your box even tried to mount a XCM Core Cooler V2 kit " Extra fans* that cools the box even more but the total sum of the job + fans was to great and they took them out again.

People that does not own a J-Tag hacked unit cant really tell how hot the boxes gets inside and people with J-Tagged ones do and sometimes they get hot.
The best way to cool boxes down = installing extra fans.

A J-Tag hack does not cause the box to overheat, and if your box went up to 80 degrees Celsius before we exchanged the X-Clamps and added new thermal paste "Washing off a earlier RROD fix attempted compound" well it all depends on how your box was working just before and after the first fix was made ( Not by us ).

Look maybe people took my response in a negative way . I appreciate the attempt and partial success to cool the box down. I had hoped it was something to do with the crap xclamps m$ puts on these xboxes, and that the heatsink was not sat correctly due to uneven pressure applied by the xclamps. Now with the screws and washers in place then should not be the root cause.

Its now time for me to get nasty with the box and start making some large holes. I plan to fit a couple of external fans, one of which is going to be the Arctic TriCool Big Boy 200mm fan.

Seriously guys though thanks again, and sorry if I didnt seem appreciative, I do appreciate you guys trying to fix the issue.

No problems We always aim to please here at PSXCare.
The thing was that someone tried to RROD fix it by changing the thermal compound but didn't exchange the clamps for washers and buts.
And if someone tried to bake the motherboard and something went wrong or used to little or to much heat it could damage the processor.
Some times when people try to fix stuff themselves they end up doing more damage than good. ( Wrapping towels and other idiotic means by my standard, yes i hate the towel trick because it damages more than doing good.)

We wish you the best of luck in modding your console with more fans and if you have some time over post some pics here and post results

                *Lol*
Well i think you will have a slight problem with hearing afterwards, i mean the 360 unit sounds as a Jet plane already ( and crashes like JAS-Saab Planes ) but those bad boys could practically move an island

take a look at this mod if you are considering adding extra fans to the xbox.http://www.xboxhacker.org/index.php?topic=14264.0

otherwise you can set the fans at 100%
made a little guide for you, hope you'll understand it.
                  download
                  /XBOX 360/development/system apps/FanSpeedFlasher
                  and
                  /XBOX 360/development/system apps/patcher
                  from xbins

-make a new folder somewhere at your computer. lets name it "fantool"
                  -open fanspeedflasher.rar and extrakt "FanSpeedFlasher\Retail\XEX\autospeed.xex"
                  -open patcher.rar and extract "patcher.exe" and "100speed.patch"
all those three files should lay in your "fantool" folder.

                  -now open patcher.exe, press "apply".
-under "patch" you should navigate and select the "100speed.patch" file.
and under "orginal file" you sould navigate and select the "autospeed.xex" file.
                  -now press "apply patch data"
if everything went okey a window will pop up saying "done!"
-press "ok" and exit the program.

rename the "autospeed.xex" to "100speed.xex" to make it easier to remember which speed you patched it with.

now just put "100speed.xex" on a usb stick and launch it from xexmenu then restart your xbox and the fans will spin at 100% all the time.

it will make a hell of a noise but its totally worth it IMO.
it worked for me but i take no responsibility if something goes wrong

If i had a 360 i really wanted to live longer i would use one of these: http://www.psxcare.com/product.php?xProd=1119&xSec=89
and put the 360 drive that i have "Flashed and all " in it and not having any drive in the J-tagged 360 unit at all.
then i would change the polarity for the fans so it takes tha cold air from outside and press it inwards instead of from the unit and out. And like the guy on the external link make a new fan tunnel so it separates GPU/CPU air.

Then i would proceed to make a D_Ust *Stupid Censor filter* cover and mount it at the place the Drive sleigh ejects. Either just by bending a perforated sheet of aluminium and spraypaint it black or so.

By having the drive completely outside the GPU gets more air instead of 15% thus cooling down more. And having a J-Tagged box you really don´t have the need for a DVD Drive

oh and i wouldn't cut up the backside like the guy did on the picture, and i would have used XCM fans or so that makes more air flow straight trough.

                    But thats me

I went and bought the Big Boy fan, jesus its huge

I cut the metal chassis ready for the plastic cover to cut. Ill do that tomorrow, the hole is very big. Now if this thing cant cool the xbox nothing will. The fan more or less covers the whole box. I too have removed to HDD has it not needed. I still cant believe M$ didnt put fans on the CPU and GPU heat sinks...

Nice thanks for the tip. The fan im getting though is one of the most powerful out there and has a handy 3 level speed switch on it, Low/Medium/High. Ill just have that on the outside to make things easier and ill see what the temp is like. From what ive read of this fan, its very good and draws more air than most out there by a long way.

Ok I have an update, I have now sat the fan on the massive hole I made in the metal case to test the heating, this is without the plastic top on. I still have the make the hole there and mount the fan...

The temp diff is amazing, its now the following and not changing:

                              CPU 62.9
                              GPU 36.5
                              MB 28.4

I expect the temp to be even lower once the plastic side is on, as a lot of air is escaping.

So all in all a success

One more thing, this fan is SILENT, I didnt expect that all.

I will upload pics when I finished mounting it onto the plastic side case.

this is great jamie! i bet the fact that we swapped the heatsinks helps alot, since the original one you had is rather compact, and also slightly blocked from above (i'm guessing you are using the fan top mounted?)
